Rules of the Road for New York Motorcyclists

Motorcyclists are vulnerable to a variety of very specific rules and regulations that other drivers are not. These laws and regulations vary from state to state. If you live and drive in the State of New York or anticipate traveling through New York on a motorcycle in the future, you should be aware of in New York motorcycle laws. Knowledge of and compliance with these laws will save you the cost of moving violation tickets, and can save your life.

Bikers must follow the same rules of any other driver must follow. Here is a brief look at the laws specific to motorcycle riders in New York:

Helmet - state helmets are mandatory for operators and drivers. Unlike many states, New York requires that the helmet has four square inch reflector attached. Novelty helmets are not allowed.

Eye - Goggles or face shield are recommended. Prescription glasses are allowed if they comply with the DMV standards. Eye protection should be worn even if the engine is equipped with a windshield.

Daytime running lights and high beam use - Executive / variable intensity lights are permitted.

Optional requirements - Motorcycles must be equipped with all of the following: stop lights, license plate, at least one red tail lights and blinkers (if it was originally equipped with blinkers or in 1985 or later model), brakes on both wheels (if in 1971 or later model), a horn, a mirror mounted on the steering wheel, steering wheel not more than 15 inches higher than seats, and a scarf. Mufflers with removable partitions are prohibited.

Motorcyclists are allowed to fully use the entire lane at all times, but can not drive more than two wide in any circuit. Lane splitting, or driving the car down the center line is dopušteno.Jedan headphones for radio or other communication is allowed.
